I really loved this book alot. Beka is one of my favorite heroines on the whole world. I thought this book was very well plotted with some elements that had me yelling at my audiobook. I loved the slow burn of a romance development. I missed most of the characters we saw the last two books because we were in a different location. I love the tie back to the first book in the series. Very nice ending to the whole series! ( )

This book starts with an unusual move by the author, with the funeral of Beka's fiance, who she'd managed to get engaged to in the time jump between this book and the next.

I didn't like Farmer at all at first, his obfuscating lack of seriousness perhaps worked too well, in that I couldn't figure out what to make of him. I did start to come around as the book went on.

I quite enjoyed the hunt, though like others have said it's another unusual move to take Beka out of her city environment and away from most of her friends. We finally get an "arse" and I really loved some of the creative strings of insults some of the characters came up with.

From having seen some commentary about the book I was aware there was a twist that upset some people. From the moment I read the first book, I was expecting the series to end with a grand face off against Rosto - surely their conflicting positions on opposite sides of the law couldn't be ignored forever. However it quickly became clear that was not going to happen, and it wasn't until some way through the book that I figured out what the real twist would be. I think it could have worked with a little more set up and foreshadowing, and lucky for me I suppose that I read all the books quickly in a row and hadn't had a chance to get more attached to the character. Took time to savor this one, the last of the Beka Cooper books. Intense! ( )

This book is so very different from the others in that Beka is not working in the underworld of some city, but engaged on a cross-country Hunt of some pretty horrible people who see nothing wrong with kidnapping little princes, turning their own allies to goo, and engaging in treason of the highest order.

The plot twist threw me, and the only reason I was able to shrug it off was because this book takes place two years after Bloodhound and all manner of things could have happened in that time.

I found the very ending, linking Beka back to George more than a little forced, but it did give me the urge to re-read some of the earlier Tortall books. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
Whether it's for debt, for work, for sex:
For the slaves,
in the hope that one day your freedom comes not through
purchase, illness, or death,
but because slavery and the slavers have been sought out and stamped out
in every home, business, warehouse, ship, quarry,
bar, factory, and nest they inhabit.
First words

Quotations
Beka and Pounce's dialog, when Beka observes separate seating for men and women during dinner:

How do they expect folk to understand each other if they're separated when they aren't rushing about their work?

They aren't expected to understand one another, he replied.  The women will learn to flirt over a friend's shoulder, instead of close.  The men will see the women as distant and unknowable.  Their friends will be only men.  The women will see men as strong and unknowable.  Their friends will be only women.
