Veterinarian Daniel had a tough childhood and was in and out of many foster homes while growing up. Now he's a foster father to four boys and hopes to provide them with a good, stable home like he never had. His friend Jesse, who is like a father to Daniel and like a grandfather to the boys, is helping him out.

Lilah is a single mother trying to start over and make ends meet. She's cutting all ties from her old life since her ex-husband is being released from prison. He was in prison for defrauding clients who made investments with him, and she was the one who blew the whistle on him. He was also abusive to Lilah.

Daniel is in need of a housekeeper and when Lilah interviews for the position he finds out that she is almost broke and homeless. He offers her the position and the upstairs apartment because he senses she could use a hand since she also has a young son to take care of. He also knows she's keeping secrets from him, but still he feels that he can trust her. Lilah finds it hard to trust another man, but the more time she spends with Daniel and the boys, she sees he has a kind and generous heart and sees the good he is trying to do for others. The two find themselves falling for each other no matter how much they try to resist the attraction.

This was such a heartwarming read. Daniel and Lilah were a wonderful couple whose hearts were in the right place. The foster boys, Lilah's son, and Jesse were all very likable and added a depth to the story. The story tended at times towards too sweet, but overall it was a very enjoyable and heartfelt romance.
