A group of children talk about their Métis backgrounds, the foods they like to eat, and the activities they participate in with their families. One child isn't as connected to their culture as the others, but the others offer reassurance that learning about it can start now. ( ) Métis Like Me is a charming book about people of Métis heritage. The author, Tasha Hilderman, is Métis. The story is accompanied by bright, happy illustrations by Risa Hugo, showing joyful children and cheerful families. The book's true beauty, though, lies in the telling of the many traditions of the Métis people. Each family has habits and ways of honoring their heritage, from music to clothing to cooking and embroidery. The point is made that not all Métis follow the ways of their heritage but are proud to be Métis nonetheless. This is a beautiful tribute to the Métis people and an educational book about an often-forgotten culture. Thank you to NetGalley and Tundra Books. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book provided by the publisher, Tundra Books, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Metis means mixed and in most of North America that means European/Indigenous family history. It also means strong, resilient, still here! Michif is only part of endangered endangered languages of North America that we must not allow to vanish along with the heritage and culture of The People. At the end there is an author's note, a recipe for Bannock/Gaalet, and even a brief dictionary. The illustrations by Rise Hugo are fun, complex, colorful, and delightful. Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your local public library! I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Penguin Random House Canada/Tundra Books via NetGalley. Thank you! no reviews | add a review
Whether or not you're Métis, there's so much to experience and learn about this amazing Indigenous culture -- take a picture book journey into Métis crafts, music and cooking with friends who love to share. Are you Métis like me? A group of children of Métis descent share and explore all the ways they celebrate and experience their heritage -- enjoying traditional foods like bannock bread and Saskatoon berries; crafting with beads; sharing stories, dance, music and songs. Each child shares a different way they enjoy honoring their backgrounds and weaving parts of the rich tapestry that makes up Métis culture. One child, though, has grown up disconnected from their history, and can't join in with the others in the same way. But they soon see it's never too late to learn, celebrate or become a part of a community in which Métis and non-Métis alike can discover the richness of an often-overlooked culture. This rhythmic, jubilant book will encourage young readers of all backgrounds to celebrate their own heritage and learn more about Métis history, and contains back matter including an author's note, recipe and dictionary to further inspire.
