But when they are the targets of kidnapping and assassination attempts, she decides that learning by doing is the only option they have left. . . . In order to protect themselves, Irene and her friends must do what they do best: search for information to defeat the overwhelming threat they face and identify their unseen enemy. Another solid entry in the Invisible Library series. Old enemies resurface and secrets are revealed. Best of all, the core trio of Irene, Kai, and Vale are working together (with Catherine) to investigate just what is going on,

Most of the chapters are still narrated by Irene. But a good chunk are told from other characters' perspectives. ( )

While trying to get to the bottom of why there have been multiple attempts to kidnap her and murder her friends and acquaintances, Irene comes face to face with a former antagonist whom she thought was dead. Of course, all kinds of chaos ensues.

By book seven you should know whether this series is for you or not. This one is decidedly for me. ( )

Aside from the ending, this one was kind of boring. Not much happens, unless you count the many times people stood around talking. I expected this book to be more like what it looks like the next book will be about, so most of this one didn't really add anything to the series arc. ( )

About the only reason I don't give this novel five stars is partly because I'm waiting to see how Cogman sticks the landing in the last book, but also because I consider "The Mortal Word" to be something of a climax within the series. I continue to be impressed at how Cogman plays out her epic and keeps it fresh. I also found Cogman's acknowledgements particularly gracious and heartfelt. ( )
