Set in the universe of the New York Times bestselling Three-Body Problem trilogy, The Redemption of Time continues Cixin Liu's multi-award-winning science fiction saga. This original story by Baoshu-published with Liu's support-envisions the aftermath of the conflict between humanity and the extraterrestrial Trisolarans. In the midst of an interstellar war, Yun Tianming found himself on the front lines. Riddled with cancer, he chose to end his life, only to find himself flash frozen and launched into space where the Trisolaran First Fleet awaited. Captured and tortured beyond endurance for decades, Yun eventually succumbed to helping the aliens subjugate humanity in order to save Earth from complete destruction. Granted a healthy clone body by the Trisolarans, Yun has spent his very long life in exile as a traitor to the human race. Nearing the end of his existence at last, he suddenly receives another reprieve-and another regeneration. A consciousness calling itself The Spirit has recruited him to wage battle against an entity that threatens the existence of the entire universe. But Yun refuses to be a pawn again and makes his own plans to save humanity's future...… (more)

So an interesting paraquel (?) of Lui Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past (The Three Body Problem). One downside particularly in the early part of the book is how much of it is just “told” with very little action. But this I felt was overcome as the book progressed and the story became more involved and interesting, though there were a lot of jumps in chronology. ( )

ich bin überhaupt nicht in die Geschichte reingekommen. Ich fande den Scheibstil und auch die Erzählweise mit dem Gespräch nicht gelungen und hab mich eher gefühlt als würde ich ein Geschichtsbuch lesen.

This novel weaves together plot points that had no real conclusion in the trilogy and builds into the lacuna there. There are some truly excellent scenes that bring you back into the Remembrance universe, especially in the first half of the book.

At the same time, the treatments of AA and Cheng Xin are stifled and one dimensional and their actions/dialogue were occasionally bizarre and often ill-suited to the characters so solidly developed in Liu Cixin’s works.

Overall, though, if you loved the trilogy this is worth the read. ( )

This should only be read as a companion piece to the Three Body trilogy, as it does not quite manage to stand on its own. It consists almost entirely of exposition and feels like a collection of deleted scenes from The Dark Forest and Death's End. Still, it's quite fun to see how Baoshu twists and expands on Liu's concepts and ideas. ( )

A disappointing attempt to patch backstories and side shoots. It doesn't add alot to the original series. ( )
