I could not put this book down! I have always been a big fan of Kelley Armstrong, and this book only increased my love for her ability to write!

You follow twin girls as their town is being killed off and magical creatures that are only part of stories are suddenly appearing and attacking the town.

When I first read this book, I truly had no clue what direction it was going to take, but it took a very good one. I wasn't expecting very much from the book because I didn't like the sound of the concept, but the concept for the plot worked very well to my surprise!

This is an addicting book that I could not put down!!

Five out of five stars! ( )

Sea of Shadows is the first in a YA trilogy by Kelley Armstrong. Departing from her usual urban fantasy setting, Sea of Shadows is firmly a high fantasy novel, set in a world different to our own, where spirits embody all things, and some people have the ability to speak to them. Moria and Ashyn are the Keeper and Seeker, possessing these abilities, and when everything goes wrong and their village is massacred, they are separated and have to survive a trek through the Wastes to find help. The primary strengths of this novel are the characters, who the reader grows to know as the novel develops. The primary weakness of this book is the world-building. Although there is definitely world-building present - we learn of castes, spirits, sorcerers, and more, the world-building is not as clear as one would expect from a high fantasy novel. The book is a good first novel in the series, doing the hard job of kicking off the Age of Legends series and universe. Overall, this book is good, although perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, as it seems to be one of Kelley's more divisive works. ( )

An interesting combination of magical powers fantasy and creepy, unexplained slaughter. Twins Moria and Ashyn are at the crisis point when their strictly ordered world goes wrong.

On the whole, quite readable, but I'm also very confused about what these girls' powers are supposed to be, since neither of them successfully did anything with them. As a creepy get-through-the-dead-zones before we perish or are possessed, I give it 5 stars, but I have no interest in following the rest of the series, because the characters do not sway me.

Reminds me of My Swordhand is Singing by Marcus Sedgwick, but that one's better.

Interesting world, complex relationships. I'm looking forward to the next novel in the series. My average rating is based on her previous work as this seems to be building up towards some awesome story telling, but if you are a Kelley Armstrong fan you may be slightly disappointed in the abrupt ending. [Wenda and Ashyn discuss the annual ritual the Seeker is about to conduct]

'I mean the Seeking. Finding the' Wenda shuddered--'bodies. And the spirits. Momma says when the damned die, they become the forsaken and can hurt us.' She looked up, dark eyes glistening. 'They can hurt you.'

'But they won't. I'm there to calm them and make sure they are buried properly. That takes away their anger. They'll go to the second world and be happy.' (chapter 1)
