This was a very interesting book and I enjoyed it very much. This book had awesome illustrations. This story is a biography about a girl named Betty Skelton. She grows up with a love of airplanes. When she was young she wrote to all the airplane manufacturers telling that her dad was look to buy an airplane. Soon after all broachers began to pour in. At the age of twelve, Betty’s dad put her in an airplane and let her fly. She tells that it wasn’t legal at the time. At sixteen she got her license to fly. She became a stunt pilot and became very good. She later bought the smallest plane and called it little stinker. In the 1950s she retired and started racing cars. Betty broke records in planes, cars, and boats. Went on to train for NASA. She lived her live in the fast line for sure. She was a true women daredevil. Teachers can use this story to talk about biographies and have students make their own biograph about themselves. Teachers can also use this book to help compare career opportunities from the past to current time. ( )

Have suggested it to the library as a purchase - looks like a valuable book, based on the fact that others by the author are good, and teachers (etc.) are always looking for more kids' history books about adventurous women.

Join Betty Skelton as she takes on one adventure after another, from flying a plane at age 12 to conquering the highest flight (higher than Mt. Everest!), breaking speed records on land in a fast car, jumping over boats, and finally training to be the first woman in outer space. Students will love her sense of adventure, never take no for an answer, personality. What a wonderful history lesson to share with your students about how the rights women enjoy today came to be.

This picture book biography is about Betty Skelton who was so determined to fly in 1942. Women were not allowed to fly during this era. she quickly became "The First Lady of Firsts." She became a record setting pilot, and the first woman to train as an astronaut. The illustrations are brilliant and drawn with acrylic paint. There are black and white and colored illustrations on the pages. The book ends with a timeline, quotes, and a bibliography of Betty Skelton's life. ( )
