Robert Nesbit's classic single-volume history of Wisconsin was expanded by Wisconsin State Historian William F. Thompson to include the period from 1940 to the late 1980s, along with updated bibliographies and appendices.

Robert C. Nesbit (1917–1999) was professor emeritus of American history at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was active in reviving Wisconsin history. He is also the author of The History of Wisconsin, Volume III: Urbanization and Industrialization, 1873–1893.

Preface to the First Edition -- State history is a difficult medium. Many historians would say that the form imposes artificial limits which vitiate its usefulness.
