Fantasy. Fiction. Thriller. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:A quest for the source of power threatened to doom the land of Xanth
As a ruler of a country steeped in enchantment, King Trent was naturally curious about the source of its magic. It made sense to order Bink, the only one of his subjects immune to supernatural harm, to undertake a quest to discover the wellspring of Xanthâ??s uniqueness.
From the beginning, Bink and his companions, Chester the centaur and Crombie, the soldier transformed into a griffin, were harried by an unseen enemy determined to thwart them. Even the power of Good Magician Humfrey, together with Binkâ??s protective talent, scarcely saved their lives.
Then when Humfrey and Crombie turned against him, all seemed lost. But Bink's ingenuity and luck prevailed, and he reached his goal.

Personally I didn't mind the first book in the series.
Yes, A Spell for Chameleon was sexist, etc, but at least the characters were vaguely likable and interesting and the plot moved along reasonably well.
The Source of Magic I didn't enjoy as much. The macho attitude and 1-dimensional characters just started to get really tedious. And it had the "everything will work out in the end" feel about it regardless of any dangers and challenges found along the way.
I've managed to collect most of this series, but will probably pull the pin after the third book, Castle Roogna, unless it manages a huge turnaround and somehow renews my interest. I have plenty of other books on my shelves to get on to. ( )

A long time ago when I was tweenish, I loved this series. I know it won't survive a re-read, so I'm noting it and letting it go.

Not as enjoyable as A Spell For Chameleon. The book was saved (in my mind) by the ethical struggle Bink went through as he decided whether or not to free X(A/N)th. Outside of that nothing really had me eagerly turning the pages. Just another fantasy ( )

The Xanth books by Piers Anthony were one of the first SciFi/Fantasy series I ever read. I love puns so I have always enjoyed them. Upon re-reading them I can see that they have some weaknesses but overall they stand the test of time. They are a fun and fast read that keeps me amused without any deep thinking required. ( )
