Found: Disaster/end of the world

Pet dogs start acting strangely, eventually their owners think they can sense impending danger. At the end of the book groups of people arrive at a safe place having followed their dogs with one group being led by a cat

This reminds me of a book I heard of at university - I'm pretty sure it was a sequel to a classic book (maybe a children's book?), and it was relatively unknown/unpopular because it was quite different to the first book. It was told from the perspective of people's pets, who have predicted the apocalypse and call a meeting of animals to decide what to do. Now though I have no idea what the book or its predecessor was!

Thank you for your responses. I've now found the book - it's The Taking by Dean Koontz. I got a clue from the reply from Mimibix about animals getting together to decide how to deal with the apocalypse and a bit of googling gave me the answer so thank you!
