On November 29, 2019, the journal Science published an academic article on the new use of existing seafloor cables to detect earthquake faults on the ocean floor. Since over 2/3 of Earth is ocean, this technique is a new way to find previously unknown ocean floor locations of earthquake faults. Here is a free news link which summarizes that article:

For example, off the US Pacific Coast, this method could be used to map out the massive but poorly understood Cascadia Subduction Zone. Such findings could simplify the development of more sustainable human lifestyles in the US states of Oregon, Washington, and the extreme northern counties of California.
