Some of us are planning to do a group read of On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers (author of The Anubis Gates). The plan is to start reading around January 14 and begin discussion on January 28. Of course, you're welcome to start reading earlier or later as your schedule permits.

Got it starred. I looked for the book on my shelves, and I don't HAVE it! I've got it on order from the library and should have it in a day or two, but this makes me wonder if I have actually ever read it. I'll find out when I start reading it if anything is familiar.

I hereby state my intent to lurk. I read it years ago and enjoyed it although it's not my favorite Powers.

I think I can lay my hands on a copy fairly easily.

Hmmm... dare I try another group read? Let's see if I can obtain the book first, and then perhaps I'll be back. I do love Tim Powers, though... *shuffles off to shop for book*

I am up to chapter 4 and trying to figure out how this book is in any way related to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Someone care to enlighten me?

>7 beserene: Glad we've inspired a book purchase! ;)

>8 alcottacre: I have to admit that I fell behind thanks to the quick arrival of a December ER book, so I won't be starting this one until tonight. But I'll let you know if I notice anything Pirates-of-the-Caribbean-y!

The book came in at the library, so I have it. Stasia, the next movie coming out, the fourth one, is supposed to be based on this book in some way. So we haven't seen it yet.

Ah, OK. I am guess that Jack Sparrow from the movie is Jack Shandy in the book then?

I've finished Book 1 so far. Where is everyone?

What page does Book 1 end on? I think I'm still very far behind. I'll have to push hard to get the book finished by Friday.

I am up to page 186. I will finish by Friday with no problem - especially since we still have no internet at my office!

I'm at the beginning of Book 2, chapter 10, I think. I'm starting to get really curious as to how they're going to adapt the book for Pirates 4...

Book 1 is the first 8 chapters, 108 pages in my book. I'm ready to start Chapter 9 this morning.

ETA I was able to finish Book 2 this morning, from Chapters 9 through 18 and another 105 pages. Only 11 chapters and 110 pages left to go in Book 3.

I'm only on page 52 but I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm not going to get it finished by tomorrow but I'm not too worried about it. Hopefully I will get plenty of reading time over the weekend.

I finished the book this morning. I enjoyed it, but The Anubis Gates remains my favorite by Powers. I am going to have to go see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie just to see how they modified this book to fit.

I'm still only on p. 154. I really like the world, but I'm not quite engaged in the story.

I'll start another thread for spoiler discussion....

Here is the thread for spoiler-ful discussion.

Did anyone else find this book strangely slow? There are so many fascinating ideas, but I feel like the protagonist is so distant from everything, just following along with other people's plans rather than having any sort of direct agency in the action. I'm still only about halfway through.

25drneutron

That feel of the protagonist is a classic Tim Powers characteristic. I don't want to say too much, but keep going! When you get done or give up, come over to the spoiler thread and we'll talk about it.

Don't worry, I won't give up! I'll make it over to the spoiler thread one of these days.
