My first bird of 2011 was a Northern Mockingbird fortunately perched on the wire just in front of our front door when I left the house on New Year's. (I say fortunately, because just to the left as I turned was a treeful of European Starlings, and it's always a disappointment to start the year off with invasives.)

What was yours?

We have a trend going. My first bird(s) were a couple of Northern Mockingbirds in the back yard.

well, once the blizzard let's up, it will either be raven or invasive ubiquitous house sparrow... so I shouldn't walk thataway to work until biggest songbird of them all spotted.
cheers from the tundra

Not sure what my first was - might have been a raven, or one of the black-capped chickadees, common redpolls, pine grosbeaks, blue jays or hairy or downy woodpeckers that have been at my feeders.

I do vaguely remember waking on New Years Day (that's seems years ago now)
to the "squawking" of a maggie (Australian Magpie) baby. 3 I think.

They are VERY insistent! and the call is designed to annoy!!!

DO NOT try THEM with a hangover.

I only have 1 left - they do grow up quick - and am starting to miss them.
