This is a pretty intense book. It reminded me of [book: Persepolis] because it's like a comic book about civil unrest in the Middle East. I wouldn't read this if you're feeling light-hearted. Best shared with kids who can handle a little scariness and drama.

This book, along with Minnie, Maloney, and Macaroni, were two of my favorite childhood books. The cluttered chaos of Stamaty's art combined with the weird irreverence of the food-based subject matter captured my imagination as a child, and I still keep copies of both on my bookshelf as a reminder.

This strip appeared as a running strip in the Village Voice forty or so years ago. Stamaty was clearly having a lot of fun doing it and in a post-script mini-strip he traces how this permitted him to spend his life as a cartoonist. Probaby most interesting to those who lived in the Village at that time.
