Owner Samuel James “S.J.” Clarke was an elder in the Jackson Boulevard Christian church in Chicago, Illinois for sixty years. He was the president of the S.J. Clarke Publishing company in Chicago, for forty years. Prior to that he had been in the same business elsewhere for fifteen years. His company was well known in the historical and biographical publishing field.
