About the Author

Anne Perry was born Juliet Hume on October 28, 1938 in Blackheath, London. Sent to Christchurch, New Zealand to recover from a childhood case of severe pneumonia, she became very close friends with another girl, Pauline Parker. When Perry's family abandoned her, she had only Parker to turn to, and show more when the Parkers planned to move from New Zealand, Parker asked that Perry be allowed to join them. When Parker's mother disagreed, Perry and Parker bludgeoned her to death. Perry eventually served five and a half years in an adult prison for the crime. Once she was freed, she changed her name and moved to America, where she eventually became a writer. Her first Victorian novel, The Cater Street Hangman, was published in 1979. Although the truth of her past came out when the case of Mrs. Parker's murder was made into a movie (Heavenly Creatures), Perry is still a popular author and continues to write. She has written over 50 books and short story collections including the Thomas Pitt series, the William Monk series, and the Daniel Pitt series. Her story, Heroes, won the 2001 Edgar Award for Best Short Story. Her title's Blind Justice and The Angel Court Affair made The New York Times Best Seller List. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Think of the low rating I've given this book as a reflection of my own taste (or lack thereof) rather than an objective criticism of the author's achievement. I have not managed to tolerate well what I consider to be the book's repetitiveness. This is the second book I've read by Perry, and I guess her stories are just not for me.

This book has nearly 2000 ratings on Amazon, with an average of 4.4 out of 5, so clearly her writing connects with many readers.

"The Sins of the Wolf have come home!" This quote, from the fifth installment of the William Monk Series, "Sins of the Wolf" refers to Dante's inferno. The Lion, The Leopard, and the Wolf in Hell all represent different aspects of sinfulness. Read the engrossing book and discover the "Sins of the Wolf".
Hester is accused of committing the murder of Mary Farralane, the matriarch of a rich and powerful family.
Does the Farralane family havescandalous secrets, all-cause for murder?

Addiction ,Murder, and Corruption

Anne Perry gives wrote an engrossing story that started as a "ripper" copycat, but developed into a much more interesting story. Opium addiction in Victorian England and the history behind it is exposed in this installment of the William Monk series. Although it is prof a series, this book can be read as a stand alone, or out of order, as I did.

Courtroom Drama in Victorian England

This installment of the William Monk series is more courtroom drama than murder mystery. The book exposes the Victorian attitudes toward women's reproductive rights, a topic which is also timely todzy.
