This was very different from the first book but its been so long since I read that one, I wasn't bothered. The plot is a bit thin, much of the tale is taken up with the historical details of the court and military campaign of Sulieman the Magnificent which I knew little about. As a consequence, I really enjoyed the book. This is historical fiction for people more interested in history than fiction.

An epic story if you enjoy reading about Renaissance Italy which I do. This story has a Jewish heroine which makes it even more interesting. I really liked Grazia, a 16th century woman who is a scholar, daughter, woman's rights advocate. lover and mother during the time of Raphael tapestries, corrupt popes, wars in Europe and the Sistine chapel.

Interesting historical fiction based in Italy. Real attempt to show what life was like for a Jewish Upper Class family during the Renaissance. Sometimes welcome at the Palaces of Rome, Venice and other parts of Italy, sometimes persecutes and the victims of never-ending Church sanctioned anti-Semitism, the family lives straddling a tenuous line between enjoying respect and privilege and being scapegoated and persecuted.

The details of day-t0-day life are interesting, the sense of place is well done, and the reader comes away having learned a thing or two!… (more)

Fantastic story. I hadn't read Book One prior to Book Two but it made no difference. This is a stand-alone book filled with an immensely enjoyable tale of several characters that are weaved together very cohesively. Wonderfully written; easy to fall into and get swept away with the time period and plots.
