A very introspective and slow-burning story about possibility, hope, the pain of loss, and thinking towards the future. This isn't a flashy, alien-filled, space battle scifi book, it's much more grounded in reality and focuses on the feelings and thoughts of each of the 6 main characters. Although I was expecting something different, I ended thoroughly enjoying the character-driven narrative and Oh's wonderful writing style.

There was a lot I didn't like about this book and yet I couldn't put it down. I liked the ending, but I didn't like the teen characters, had a difficult time telling them apart. Mixed feelings. Don't expect a book about space travel going into this.

DNF @ page 143. The premise was ludicrous to start with - half-a-dozen teenagers are sent off to begin the colonisation of a new world, with only a handful of expert adults along. Putting that aside, it has been teen angst, poorly differentiated characters, and implausibilities all the way, and they've only just left Earth by page 143! I couldn't stand another 400-odd pages of this.

Scifi in the vein of Becky Chambers and maybe a bit of Interstellar. Not really about the science or space or big ideas, but more about the characters and humanity in general. An interesting read, but maybe not as impactful as it could have been. Objectively very well written, but I can see how this might be a lot boring for someone looking for space opera or a lot of action in general. For me, it was a solid read, but not one I feel compelled to reread anytime soon. Nothing very ground breaking or super original, though there's also nothing actively wrong with it, either.… (more)
