Short biography

Reviews

Clearly aimed at the young adult market and therefore not having the depth and scope of the New Crozubon novels - this is still unmistakably Mieville and therefore brilliantly imaginative inventive and enjoyable. Flying London buses with conductors who can really conduct electricity, Ninja Dustbins and a character who is an old fashioned diving suit filled with various forms of sealife. Echoes of Lewis Carroll with syntax, grammer and wordplay becoming integral to the development of the plot. Room for a sequel or 2 based on the ending as well.… (more)

Quite difficult to get into and didn't seem to really go anywhere. Will add to my re-read list and see if I change my mind.

Very strong 4.5 stars. Very nearly a 5. Many reviews here are saying this is the weakest of the New Crozubon tales but I enjoyed it more the Perdidio St Station and The Scar. The plot seems better paced and driven and I for one did nit miss the long lists of place names from Perdido St Station. Highly recommended.

This is a propulsive noir detective story above all else, but the dual-city setting is fascinating, highlighting as it does social constructs (almost literal) and how we can choose not to see what’s right in front of us. Like a good noir, greed and corruption are at the heart of the story, in this case it’s the corruption of global capitalism.
