"Nonsense! If you want to do it, you can do it. The question is, do you want to do it?”
~Nellie Bly
Elizabeth Cochran began her life in Pennsylvania during 1864. Through circumstances and luck (both good and bad) she would eventually find herself in a pivotal role as one of the first female "stunt" newspaper reporters.
Author Brooke Kroeger provides an in-depth biography of Bly's career and to a lesser extent, her personal life. The book is well researched and events are easy to follow, however the story loses some of its momentum due to an overabundance of detailed information. Since Bly didn't leave behind any journals or diaries, the book was primarily fact oriented without providing much insight into her personal thoughts and most motivations. That left me to wonder how much of Bly's journalism career was based on a created persona.
