This book was just... such a drag. It is cliché. You know what is going to happen before it happens, it is just a matter of when. The entire plot hinges on the fact that neither half of the couple will say "I love you," dragging out misadventures and hijinks where both of the characters are convinced that the other does not love him or her. That is pretty much the entirety of this book. Also the (spoilers) dead parent coming back from the grave subplot was such a mess of a soap opera.

DARK LOVER, last in the Rose Trilogy and latest in the Masters of Time series, drew me in, but ultimately left me wondering if I missed something. I liked Samantha (Sam) and was intrigued by Ian, but the two of them together didn't make my heart race.

Ian was tormented, abused and used by demons for centuries—so he has some...disturbing character quirks, at times (not the least of which seems to be his disregard for tact), and Samantha locked away all her emotions in an effort to combat witnessing her mother's brutal murder years ago. Two angsty love interests together does not make a perfect romance. It seemed at times as if when one would overcome a portion of their angst, the other would just dig their heels in deeper so that neither made progress forward together until the very end.

Ian was a persuasive guy, turning out all the tricks to lure a very reluctant (but attracted) Sam to his bed. Their last encounter left him hot and ready, but left her hot and unwilling to bend her principles for a guy who she viewed as a jerk. Sam, for her part, fell into the 'My lips say no, my body says yes' trap, unfortunately.

In the end, DARK LOVER was a decent conclusion to the Rose Trilogy, but a weaker installment to the Masters of Time series as a whole.
