Brief overview of immigration from Denmark to Wisconsin: economic conditions in Denmark vs America, unimportance of religion to most Danes (yet the book devoted a number of pages to the different short-lived churches in WI), attempts to preserve culture vs desire to assimilate, areas with highest numbers of Danes (yet still fewer than other ethnicities). The final section is excerpts from letters of one man to family back home spanning 1847-1888.
I have a Danish great-grandfather, so will keep the book in my genealogical collection. I don't feel this gave much of a flavor of what made Danes different from other immigrants. But I am going to look for one of the references "A New Life: Danish Emigration to North America as Described by the Emigrants Themselves in Letters, 1842-1946" by Niels Peter Stilling & Anne Lisbeth Olsen, 1994, Aalborg, Denmark.… (more)
