This book of lore is so very far different from the lands of ice and snow that my ancestors come from but the use of oral traditions to convey the tenets of humanity is the same the world over. These come from a land lush with jungles and the animals who live there.
There is even a QR Code for a free audio reading of this book (not available to reviewers).
The illustrations by Chaaya Prabhat are brilliantly vivid and convey everything a reader could wish for.
Perfect for reading alone or WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, especially to a school or your local public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Nosy Crow Inc. via NetGalley. Thank you!

This is a collection of poems, each a short vignette of a Goddess, monster or mortal. Some tell of their nature, others of specific instances. Some even take the immortals and put them in a mortal world, how would they cope, how would it have mellowed them. They are variable in length and there is a requirement to be fairly up on your mythology, or some of the names and back stories will be missing (a couple threw me, I admit). The best are those torn between two opposing forces, Persephone, for example. It was noticeable that the monsters are all female - difficult women seem to have been vilified for all time.
I listened to this, I'd quite like to see a copy, I think it might be interesting to see how it is arranged on the page.

“Every love does not have to be made of desire. Some loves are kept for the people who stand by you through everything. Some soulmates are sisters not lovers. Some loves are for those who give you hope. And some for the strength, for wisdom, for dreams.”

“Why be a half-finished poem in some forgotten poet’s story, when one can be an odyssey in and of herself, part magic, part villain, part Goddess, part lover.”

EMPOWERED! That's exactly how I feel while and after reading Nikita Gills rendition of fairy tales. I was always a fan of fairy tales growing up and now that I think of it, almost all of them were sold on female leads (the princesses) but they were shown as weak and fragile, made of paper and waiting for their prince charming to save their lives. We never even got to think of the story from the other characters point of view because of how beautiful the princess and her dress was. Nikita Gill changed that for me. Not only has she rewritten the fairy tales from the point of view of other characters but also did an amazing job at questioning the age old norms and discussing taboos the way no one ever has. If you haven't read this book, pick it up because no matter your gender, you will finish this book feeling strong, powerful and moved.… (more)
