Short biography
Tess Gerritsen left a successful practice as an internist to raise her children and concentrate on her writing. She gained nationwide acclaim for her first novel of suspense, the 1996 New York Times bestseller Harvest. Subsequently, she wrote three bestselling medical thrillers, Life Support (1997), Bloodstream (1998), and Gravity (1999). Her first crime thriller, The Surgeon (2001) introduced the character of homicide detective Jane Rizzoli, who then became the focus of a series of novels that paired her with medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles. The books were adapted into the television series Rizzoli & Isles.

This really had me quessing and I didn't quite figure out the answer I was looking for.....the twists and turns in the story worked! Great characters and fun to think about two authors working together to produce this page-turning book.

I enjoyed this story of retired spies and lots of intrigue. I felt it was a little slow in the first chapters but I had a hard time putting the book down by the middle of the book. I loved Maggie and her friends in the Martini Club. I liked Jo. I enjoyed the action.

This is my first Tess Gerritsen. It won't be my last. I've gathered that the book is one of a series, but that simply doesn't matter. The characters, some of whom appear in other Gerritsen books apparenty, are stand-alones who become quickly quite believable.

A clever plot brings together two seemingly unconnected stories, and we find ourselves in a violent world of human trafficking, police and FBI corruption, and a nine-and-a-bit-months pregnant detective, Jane Rizzoli. Whether you're blanching at the details of a too-much-information autopsy, being quietly horrified at the bleak life of a young trafficked woman, willing a siege situation to come out right - since our pregnant cop is right in the thick of it - or following the convoluted politics of the case, you'll be involved in this narrative.

It's not a good book for an insomniac like me, as I chose to read yet another chapter before trying to settle down at last to sleep...and then another ... and another. A thoroughly involving read.
