This plot, though I liked what plot there is. I'd like to see these character fleshed out a lot more and have them actually getting to know each other better before more bedroom antics though. Also, it would be nice if more than one person calls Cameron by name as there's a distinct lack of his name in the text.

One thing that bothered me is: when the pair go to find another character at his remote hunting cabin, they get ambushed and break into the guy's house looking for weapons. Now, assuming someone is actually home at the time, and there was no indication that he was not home, you'd think that person would come investigate glass being broken. This does not happen, but neither Jake nor Cameron make note of the lack of the owner showing up while they're at the cabin. In fact, neither one think to even check to see if he might be hurt or otherwise in trouble (this character does show up in the next few pages, it's just at the time, really? Aren't you even curious to know where this guy is?)… (more)

There are very few murder mysteries, I suspect, that can be called “delightful” – but I think that ‘Murder Most Yowl’ qualifies. I suspected it would be fun to read from the title alone, and by the time I had finished the first chapter, I was sure of three things. First, Cameron is the most talented “unofficial” detective and dedicated cat-sitter I have ever met. Second, his stubborn insistence on solving the case he stumbles into when he expects to take care of a cat is exceptional. And third, the way he tells the story, with all the little observations he makes along the way, cracked me up. It made this story a joy to read, despite the threats and violence that are unavoidable when a murderer is involved.

Cameron left law enforcement not because he was incompetent or because the stress got to be too much. He left because he has a conscience, and he has trouble with the wrong people dying on his watch. Both are, in my book, honorable reasons, but not everyone agrees. Not that Cameron cares – he has built a new life around his cat-centric business, and is quite happy. Until one day he finds the body of a murdered woman whose cat he was supposed to take care of while she traveled - and disagrees with the local sheriff about what happened.

Cameron is not one to hold back, and despite the fact that he keeps telling himself to butt out, he can’t help but make sure that justice is done. Not even the sheriff telling him to back off helps, nor does a terrifying blind date stop Cameron, and so he keeps digging and digging until he gets to the bottom of the case. Commendable if somewhat risky!

If you like mysteries that are not too hard to solve, if characters who fight a lot initially but fundamentally get along well with each other are your thing, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that is a true mix of a mystery and a romance (without either one taking over), then you will probably like this novella.
