This is not one of the better novelisations of a Doctor Who TV story, but is a workmanlike adaptation of what was anyway a fairly pedestrian story, usually regarded as the weakest of the early Cyberman stories, though though there are some colourful human characters among the Wheel's personnel. The Cybermen's plot is very convoluted and also requires suspiciously ready acceptance of unlikely coincidences by the Wheel's crew. The story is also noteworthy for the first appearance of companion Zoe.

I am celebrating the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who by reading a couple of novelisations of classic TV stories from the pen of the late, great Terrance Dicks. This is a novelisation of the second ever Dalek story, first broadcast in late 1964 after the show had been on for a year. It is also the last story for the Doctor's first companion and grand-daughter Susan. The plot is dramatic and there is room for a bit more expansiveness on characters' motivations and the descriptions of the extensive devastation of a London conquered and largely destroyed by the Daleks. Terrance just had a gift for telling a proper story without pretension or bashing the reader over the head with his views, and this is always very enjoyable.… (more)

An eminently readable, but also very ordinary, Target adventure. I don't want to besmirch Terrance Dicks' name in any way, or the excellent legacy he left of inspiring a generation of children to read - indeed, I would still very gladly put this book in a ten year old's hand. However, I also know that Dicks wrote other, far more exciting Target novels. This one is starting to indicate the direction of his books in the late '70s, which he wrote at too great a speed for a lot of the more interesting detail he had worked into earlier volumes. In particular, it suffers in comparison to its "prequel," the earlier Doctor Who and the Abominable Snowmen, which is a wonderfully atmospheric book.

Having said that, there are still some nice little touches and tweaks to this one, including an extended meeting between the Doctor and Col. Lethbridge-Stewart that never happened on screen, and the quiet rewriting of an anti-Semitic stereotype and muffling of a Welsh one. Pound for pound the TV serial is simply better, especially as there's no real way for Dicks to replicate Douglas Camfield's well-directed action sequences (and he doesn't really try) - but it's still a very likeable book, and as I said, one I'd be happy to hand to a budding Doctor Who fan.

Utterly charming. An easy guide through the most popular dinosaurs (and a little bit beyond), presented via the cheerful persona of Tom Baker’s Doctor. I’d have loved this as a kid and I’m mystified we didn’t get anything similar during the show’s 21st century heyday (someone must have pitched it).

Also always takes me aback when I’m reminded that as late as the 1970s (when this book was written) there was still no consensus on what killed off the dinosaurs.
