The series apparently starts in the 2040s; in the No Time Like the Past, Madeleine Maxwell mentions that the Crystal Exhibition of 1851 is approximately two hundred years before the time they traveled from. Max is the narrator of most of the stories.Shortly after a civil war in England, people arrive from the future with "pods", time travel machines that resemble stone huts. They persuade the government to finance them through Thirsk University, and set up the Institute of Historical Research at St. Mary's under Dr. Bairstow. They send out historians to investigate history "in contemporary time" (they don't like the term "time travel"). In addition their own time line, there are alternate time lines.Other travelers from the future include Leon Farrell, Clive Ronan, Annie Bessant. Bairstow, Ronan and Annie Bessant once formed a team, and, unfortunately, a romantic triangle.Since St. Mary's is a historic building, the staff are in constant battle with the Society for the Protection of Historical Buildings (SPOHB), especially when experiments goes awry and knock down parts of the building. Adding to the confusion, Dr. Bairstow's personal assistant, whether he likes it or not, is Cleo Partridge, an incarnation of Kleio (or Clio), the Muse of History, who intervenes as she sees fit.Description by PuddinTame.
